I grew up in a VERY small town. I was one of 68 seniors in my graduating class, my entire high school was about 250 people, and that was because it was not only the high school for my hometown but for the town 15 miles away as well. There were no traffic lights in my hometown. Within city limits I can still probably tell you where all the stop signs are.

This was before there was internet access of any kind for people who weren’t part of DARPA. I had nothing but subscriptions to Rolling Stone and Newsweek to give me access to the rest of the world. I sat in my room. A lot. And I listened to Depeche Mode. And I wanted to go see and go live in these places I saw in RS and Newsweek.

So it isn’t like I moved all that far away but now I live in civilization, I have internet access, and I have more than one option for ANYthing: Grocery stores, shopping, restaurants, parks, movies, and so on.

Once in awhile I have these moments when I think: When I was 15 and sitting in my room listening to Depeche Mode and wanting nothing more in life than the hell out of my hometown, I never thought I’d end up…

and there are a LOT of things I’ve ended that sentence with:
- with a big gay man pinning me to the floor and shouting “Shag me baby, yeah!”
- standing on a stage in front of 750 people talking about pepper.
- singing “Living La Vida Loca” while wearing a grass skirt at Enchanted Forest in the 7 Dwarfs Mine.
- getting married at the lodge where they filmed part of “The Shining”.
- not just going to Macworld, but going to Macworld as part of my job.
- seeing three more Star Wars movies.
- meeting Chunk from “The Goonies”.

Among other things, those are moments when that thought crossed my mind.

And as of an hour ago I think the permanent top of this list will now be: Having Guy Kawasaki help me buy Gitmo Undies*.
